A little family history

I recently found out that one of my ancestors was the great sword maker Masamune. I always heard my grandmother talk about our ancestors on her side but never really paid too much attention to it. My Dad was out here for work recently and we met for dinner down in San Diego. He told me about a sword he recently bought from a friend. He touched this sword and instantly felt a connection. He had no idea why at the time, but after talking to my grandmother he found out the sword was made by one of our ancestors. Masamune's swords are considered deeply spiritual, pure and benevolent. In Japanese sword folklore his swords are contrasted with those of Muramasa's whose were regarded as evil, brutish and violent.

The reason I wanted to share this little piece of my family history with you is because of the instant passion I felt for metalsmithing and welding. I always had a creative side growing up. I dabbled with drawing, painting and ceramics but nothing really stuck. I enjoyed it but never experienced the same connection that I do working in metal. I took my first sculpture class my freshman year of college and I have never looked back since.

I am definitely excited to find out that my passion, skill, and high value for craftsmanship goes so far back in my family line.

There was a video on Etsy a few days ago about another Japanese sword maker and I wanted to share it with you. I hope that traditions like this don't die out with their masters but are passed on.

Brand new necklace collection available online

Just in time for the holidays I'm rolling out some new button necklaces in brass. I've already delivered a selection to Co-op 28, Handmade Galleries and Flock Shop. Also Twig and Willow in Long Beach, a brand new account for my jewelry has their selection in the mail.

The price of silver has more than doubled in the last year so I came up with this design for a more budget friendly option. I am loving the glitter, sparkle and texture on the buttons I selected. The first 9 styles are already up in my Etsy shop and they are priced at $40.00!

These necklaces all measure right around 1 inch and hang on a 20 inch chain. They have a sparkly little jewel back by the clasp, because who doesn't love a little sparkle.

Here's a tip if you have an allergy to brass like I do, paint a little clear nail polish on the back. I only get the lovely green line when I wear brass rings but just in case that's my trick.

This week I am focusing on my new marketing plan and at the end of the week I get to see my baby sister and that always recharges me. My little sister is an amazing woman and I am so proud of the person she has become.

Out and about on my bike

I decided to start my week with a bike ride down to Hermosa Beach to get the week off on the right foot. One of the things I love the lost about my new apartment is how convenient it is to bike everywhere. The closest side street leads right to the bike path and then I can go north or south along the coast. Today I decided to take my camera along for the ride and snapped a few photos to share with you. The ride today was a challenging one because the wind was blowing pretty hard, but it's just so beautiful all along the ride that it definitely beats working out at the gym.

The great thing about biking everywhere around my new apartment is that I have discovered lots of new places I probably would have missed if I was in my car.

Life gets so serious at times, and sometimes I just need to take a moment and be silly-to play. I find with my work it really helps when I start experimenting with new ideas. I can sketch and re-sketch but I often need to hold something in my hand. I need to feel it, I want to play with it.

Things have been getting a little overwhelming lately, but when I am at my bench all of my worries and stresses just fall away. I get the same feeling when I am on my bike or snowboard, I feel really lucky to have these getaways in my everyday life.

The good news is I am working on some new designs for the Beckman's West show this summer and am really excited to get everything photographed so I can share it with you.

There is a lot going on in the world around us right now that is far from happy. I am one of those people that takes the problems of the world very personally. I want to save the world, I have wanted to save the world since I was a little girl. Sometimes the problems in the world seem so daunting and insurmountable that I feel like nothing I do will ever make a difference. Since I am far from perfect, occasionally I try to turn off my emotional connection to the world and the people and animals in it. I have stopped watching the news at times, stopped reading it online, and stopped listening to NPR. This never lasts very long but it does happen.

So I have been trying to get a little perspective and I thought I would share three things that make me happy in my world today. In the meantime I am also taking small steps to do what I can to help. I think if everyone took small steps we could really see some major changes. The first step I took was going to a volunteer training with 826LA. I am beyond excited to work with this organization and as soon as I finish moving this week, I am going to start with the after school tutoring program in Venice. I am also transitioning back to being vegan. I have been vegetarian since I was a young teenager, and I was vegan in college. I read a post on One Green Planet recently and I decided I really can no longer justify eating cheese, eggs, or other dairy. I made these decisions before the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan, so the next thing I decided I could do was donate to the Red Cross.

I would love to know what things make you happy on this lovely Monday.

I would also love to know what you think you or others can do to make this world a little nicer.

There are so many small things we can do in our daily lives that may seem trivial but they really are so far from being trivial. We can all smile and say hi to our neighbors, do a favor for a friend, volunteer our time with a non-profit, spend time with our families, feed a stranger's expired parking meter, not honk or give the finger to strangers, be polite to anyone we interact with, just to name a few.

Process, Packaging, and Bikes

I really am a completely inconsistent blogger. I take pictures and write down ideas of what I want to blog about, but they never actually make it on to my blog. I tend to think no one is reading it anyway, so it seems a bit self indulgent to me to write about myself. I am going to try to do it a little more anyway.

I think all the things that go on behind the scenes of the finished product are sometimes more interesting than the finished piece. Although the step that makes me excited the most often is setting the stone or button in to the finished piece. So I do get lots of joy from the finished piece too.

One of the least exciting parts for me about running my own business is packing and shipping. I still want to come up with a way to ship jewelry without so many plastic bags involved. If you have any suggestions please share. I am the person who always says I don't need a bag to the checkout clerk, or brings my own. It is quite annoying that I cannot translate this into my shipping practices as well. On a side note my boyfriend actually made a joke about me being a hippie at the farmer's market last weekend when I pulled out my canvas bag. However, he quickly saw how useful it was.

Then on the other hand one of the exciting aspects of running my business is the collaboration projects that come to life. Spitfire Girl is a company run by the sassy and talented Kristin. They have their flagship store in Echo Park. This funky shop carries all of her cards, notebooks, toys, and more, along with lots of other fantastic finds that fit her style and vision. You can see more of the jewelry I make for her brand on the site. Collaborations like this are exciting to me because Kristin found my line on the Renegade Craft site. I went in to show her my line, which she also carries in her store; but it turned out she wanted a line created with the Spitfire artwork and so it began.

I have lots of grand plans for my little business, and I am going to start sharing with you more of the ups and downs that happen behind the scenes. I have some amusing failure stories that I think are definitely worth telling in the near future.

In unrelated news I found a used bike on craigslist that I am so excited about. I have already gone out on 2 rides since I got it this past weekend and I am totally loving it.

This weekend I wandered some of the galleries in Culver City because I wanted to see the "Happy Valley" exhibit by Paul Barnes at Thinkspace Gallery. You can see some of the work that was on display here.

Before heading to Culver City I stopped by Leanna Lin's Wonderland to see Melissa of Axelhoney's show "Tigerbunny". I picked up the "Tranquility" print to hang up over my bench. There was definitely more than one painting that I would love to have in my house.

I've been sketching a lot of new ideas lately for my own line. Hopefully a few of them will make it out into the world this year. Some of the ideas have already gone through four or more samples that I wasn't happy with for one reason or another.

I saw this quote this morning over on kind over matter and decided I wanted to share it on my blog too.

I have been trying to figure out what I want to blog about over here recently. So far I have decided to keep it simple with things that inspire me and make me feel alive.

I love the idea of offering tutorial videos and posts, but I just can't seem to ever get around to them. So for now little tidbits of inspiration will have to do.

201o was a year of big changes and adventures for me, and I expect no less from the universe and myself for 2011.

The only resolution I made was to make 2011 better than the last. Simple right?

So here's to big adventures and leaning in to all of your dreams for 2011.

My Thanksgiving dinner

Holly over on Decor8 blogged about gratitude over on her blog and encouraged her readers to blog about it, or make their own list. I have so much to be thankful for, so I thought I would join in since I just enjoyed my first Thanksgiving back in New England in over 5 years.

I agree with Holly that it's important to focus on all the the good things we have in our lives rather than the bad. I live far away from most of my family and that is hard sometimes, but it means when I do get to see them I am so grateful!

I am thankful for....
my amazing family, my fantastic friends, my health, my jewelry business, my apartment, snowboarding, sunshine, rain, snow, the beach, the mountains, airplane trips, vacations, crafty friends, artist friends, support, love, courage, determination, creativity, great restaurants, books, music, and really everyone and everything I have. I am thankful for my life, I am so lucky to be living my life the way that I do everyday.

So what are you thankful this for this year?

Harvest

I will be heading back to lovely New England, specifically Conway, MA next week for Thanksgiving with some of my fantastic family. I will be taking lots of pictures of the scenery, I am a sucker for Fall, it's my favorite season and I don't see much of it living in Los Angeles. I may even blog a bit while I am there. I love the towns around there, the shops, studios, galleries, restaurants and more. I will always be a New England girl at heart no matter where I live.
I haven't been back for Thanksgiving or Christmas in the 5 years I have lived in Los Angeles. I always waited till January so I could enjoy my family after my busiest time of the year, so this is really exciting for me. Of course I have a show right before I leave and right after I get back, but the long hours are totally worth it to see my family.

I have so much to be thankful for this year it will be nice to be away from work completely, to take it all in with my family.

Gearing up for the Holiday Season!!

Christmas is my favorite time of the year and I am already catching the holiday cheer bug. I love the decorations, the baking, the food, the music, the snow, holiday parties, and the handmade touches. Really I just love it all and a lot of times the season passes so quickly for me because I am so busy with orders and shows that I can hardly catch my breath.

I have just two weeks until all the local craft shows start. I have a show every weekend till Christmas so I am going to busy, but I am determined to slow down and enjoy some of my favorite traditions with my friends and family.

I just wanted to pop in share my thoughts. What's your favorite tradition or memory surrounding the holidays? Do you love this time of year as much as I do?

I met Joe of Shiner International at the California Gift Show this summer and fell in love with his furniture and lighting. Can you see why? I am the proud owner of the black rib chair. I had to wait around for a very long time for the drayage guys to help me get the chair into my car after the show, but it was well worth it.

Not only is his work aesthetically pleasing to look at, but it's also made in Atlanta, GA from recycled and eco-friendly materials . See the white lights in the photos? They are made out of styrofoam. He describes his work as "dirty, sexy, clever and dark". The company is named Shiner, like a black eye. Joe wore his first black eye as a badge of honor at the age of seven and now as an adult he can stand proudly behind these collections.

I like to daydream about interior design sometimes and having this unique piece of furniture in my apartment allows those daydreams to become just a little more realistic. I check out blogs like Decor8 regularly just to get my fix. Since I live in Los Angeles space comes at a premium, so I am not going to be a homeowner with the freedom to decorate and remodel anytime soon . I hope someday my chair will have a place in a much larger studio space with lots of windows and light, but for now it is happy residing next to my gray futon.

I meant to write about this collection months ago but I am just getting around to blogging again. Better late than never right?

I read an article by Johnny B Truant on Etsy this week and it got me thinking about my descriptions. I try to tell the details so people know the size, color, and materials of the ring they are buying, but I don't say a whole lot else. I have worked on my pictures over the years to try to tell the buyer more through images but what about the text they read?

I buy a lot of handmade and artist work myself. Actually everything hanging on my walls I got at an art show or craft show. I buy handmade jewelry, ceramics, stationary, bath products, and more and I love to tell the story to people who ask or the people I give the gift to. It's so much more interesting than saying I bought this at Target for you. I get excited about the story and telling people about the awesome craft fairs, and Etsy shops I bought the item for. So why don't I do that for my customer online? I do it for the customers who buy from me at shows, and I give the information to the store owners who carry my line.

So I guess it's time to start telling my story.

I started by updating 1 listing this morning and hopefully I will get more done this weekend.

Friday Morning Musings

I haven't posted on my blog in months, I really have every intention of blogging more regularly. I even think to myself I should blog about this but then I get busy working on new designs and filling orders, and I forget. I've been using my facebook f an page to do a few quick updates. For some reason I feel like I have to plan out what I am going to say if I post it here. But over on facebook I don't have the same hang ups. On the subject of facebook have you seen the new Social Network movie? I think I am going to go see it tonight.

Here are a few pictures of what I have been up to. I have been trying to get out around LA a lot more recently and really enjoy the city I live in. I've gone on hikes and walks, biked to the beach, gone to some festivals, checked out new restaurants, art openings, and some music. There really is so much to do when you live in a city, I feel like I should take advantage of it more. Who knows in a few years I could be living in the middle of nowhere, because although I do love the city I also love the country.

It was my birthday and....

I turned 28 last month and had a fantastic birthday night with my friends. I felt so lucky to have such wonderful friends to celebrate with. I moved out to Los Angeles 5 years ago only knowing my ex-boyfriend and a few friends from college. Now it's 5 years later and I have made so many great friends that I hope will be friends for many years to come. A few of my closest friends from college and high school have even moved out here. The picture above is from dinner at Mao's Kitchen. My fortune from the night said "you will be successful through innovation and determination". I kept the fortune and put it on my fridge.

In those 5 years I have also started my own line of jewelry, which most of you who read my blog probably already know. The picture above is from the Beckman's West show in Los Angeles. It was a wholesale only show and I am so excited to say that it was my best show yet. I doubled the stores I will be in. Most of the orders will be going out within the next 6 weeks. So far I have shipped out to Hobie Surf Shops to get my jewelry into the Corona Del Mar store that just opened up. It will be available in 4 of their 5 shops very soon. Here is an article on the new store opening up. Getting this account was really exciting for me since I started out in LA working at 9star another board shop in West LA and Mission Viejo. I even bought the Hobie brand of swimsuits for the ladies section. As I start shipping out the rest of the stores I will try my best to update my blog and site with the new places you can find my jewelry.

Overall I am really excited about what's in store for the next year of my life and the adventures I will be going on. I'm finally going on a family vacation next month to South Carolina, so I get to catch up with my family and meet my two nephews who were living in Japan up until recently.

I hope this post wasn't too personal, but I know sometimes I really enjoy reading personal stories on some of the blogs I read.

Getting Ready for California Gift and Renegade LA

The past weekend I did the Patchwork Long Beach show and had so much fun. I also did a little trunk show at Mindful Nest on Saturday. It was wonderful to meet customers who have bought my jewelry online or in the store face to face and chat a little. I saw lots of familiar faces at the Patchwork show as well as met a few new people. Thanks to Tina of Hi Tree for being such a great neighbor at Patchwork. Tyler Bender Book Co., Harris-Casey Designs, and Janaration were all lovely to hang out with at Mindful Nest too.

What are you up to for the 3 day weekend? Since I live in sunny Los Angeles I will be enjoying some time outdoors at bbq's and the beach.

Next week I leave with work for the JCK Las Vegas show. I am going to try to do a follow up post about some of what I see there. I will be working at a booth in the Design Center for a new line launching at JCK called Meus Designs. The website isn't up just yet but I will share the link when it is. A few friends that will be at the JCK show are Sara Weinstock and Branch. During the week there are lots of other shows like ACRE and AGTA going on around Vegas. I am of course excited for the tools section of JCK and all the beautiful stones at AGTA.

I feel really lucky sometimes to be surrounded by so many people with such amazing and diverse talents, I'd thought I'd share a few today.
First up are the talented duo that make up Bughouse, Rebecca and Jeff. I met these two at one of my first craft shows ever and have loved their work ever since. I now have a piece of both Jeff's and Rebecca's art hanging in my house.

Next up is the talented Kristin of Spitfire Girl, she just revamped her website so head on over for some totally fabulous gifts. This woman and her talented team do it all. They run a super cute store in Echo Park that always has something new and awesome. I almost always leave the shop with something great for myself or a friend. Spitfire Girl has everything from wood stationary, art, toys, and jewelry and their goods are available across the country and probably even worldwide.

Last but certainly not least are the lovely Jennifer and Robert of Fournier Clothing. They recently launched their website and besides the lovely vintage inspired designs the website is just fun to look at. I love the snapshots of the clothing on models on the home page, and the splash page has a lovely green fabric that makes me want to touch my computer screen.
Fournier Clothing is a new brand but Jennifer has loads of experience and talent in her bag of tricks so click on the link above to check out her designs.

Spring and Summer Shows Yippee!!

I got accepted to Unique LA and Renegade LA so I wanted to share the details with you the details! I will also being doing the California Gift Show again in the Beckman's West section. The Gift show is wholesale only but the Renegade and Unique are open to everyone so please come by and say hi.

I have a table in eco-friendly section. I will be surrounded by lots of talented artists and designers. My table is actually right next to Chocolate and Steel, she has some really great new work too. To give you a sampling of the talent check out these sites, misha ashton photography, steppie, myfriendroze, dust and co, oh hello friend, rebe, hi tree, janaration, combustion glassworks, rock scissor paper, dee and lala, tyler bender book co., delica, and so much more. You can also visit the Unique LA site for a whole list. This show is $10.00 at the door but part of the proceeds go to a local charity!

This event is free and will be held in the Cornfields in downtown LA. July 24th + 25th from 11-7pm. My birthday is Friday the 23rd so I am sure to have some extra special birthday deals. More info here. Like at Unique I will be surrounded by a ton of talent so save the date!

The Balance of the Universe...

Today was an interesting day and I just wanted to write about it. The day started out a little rough. It took me an hour and a half to get to work. It usually only takes about 15 minutes. Not a great start.

But I gave some work to someone else to do for me yesterday and picked it up today, I was so happy with the quick turn around and quality. I am slowly learning that I am not superwoman. This step actually works in to the way I want my business to grow and creating a real business plan.

Then as I was leaving work today I hit someone while I was backing up. I frightened the other driver, but there was no damage, which was fantastic. I apologized profusely and we were both on our way. Oh yea and a friend gave me her old tv set, I haven't had one since I moved.

Since I was stuck in traffic again on the way home because of a Dodgers game, it got me thinking about how these things happen every day and you can choose to focus on the negative or the positive. I choose to focus on the positive. I am super excited about the new help I will have with my line, and thankful for the accident being so minor, and the free tv set.

I am hoping to get back into the swing of blogging very soon. I have been slowly updating my etsy site, website, and flickr page, but there is still quite a bit to do.
In the meantime I have made time for other things besides work in my life and it has left me feeling more balanced, happy, and complete. I have finally realized that I really cannot please everyone around me all the time, and at 27 years old it was about time. No matter how hard I try I will never be perfect, no one will.
For my jewelry line, I am looking forward to my spring and summer shows, Unique LA for one. More on that later....
Teaching may be in my future, so stay tuned if you live in Southern California, you might be able to take a class with me soon. I might even take a class or two myself. Did you know that's why I moved to Los Angeles in the first place? I thought I was going to go to grad school out here. I have lived here for 5 years and although I have done a lot of other things, grad school is not one of them. I also came here because I was in love with a boy from my childhood, but that journey did not play out so well, but grad school still might one day.

Last weekend I dogsat for my friend's puppy Nana. She is beyond adorable and has a ton of personality.
She was all worn out from a morning at the park in the picture below.

New Tennis Racket!!

I finished my taxes today and in celebration I bought myself a new tennis racket. I have been using the same tennis rackets since high school and I love them, but I felt like checking out what was new out there in the tennis world.
I really do not know much about rackets and the tech that goes into them, but I went to the Racket Doctor and showed them my old rackets, explained how I play and what I want. They showed me 6 or so rackets and this is the one I walked out with, the Volkl Power Bridge 6 Attiva. It's woman specific and I like that, the reviews I've read say it's a good lightweight racket that offers power, control and comfort.
If only the rain would stop I could test out my new racket.

I am starting to gear up again for the spring retail and wholesale shows and I am really trying to have more inventory that last year so wish me luck. Once I hear if I am accepted to the shows I applied to I will be sure to post where you can come and see me.

I have been completely MIA from the blogging world for months and months. I have actually been MIA from most of my sites online, Etsy, flickr , and this blog have all been sadly neglected. I have been busy making lots of new work, lots of old work, doing shows, and just trying to keep up in general. So this is a post just to say hi again.

One of my favorite things to do in the winter is snowboard, so whenever I can I am off in the mountains. The best thing about snowboarding is that I do not have to worry about my deadlines or anything else hanging over my head. I am just out there with my friends enjoying every second. I feel like a kid when I am snowboarding, most of the time I probably have a goofy grin plastered across my face.
Do you have anything that makes you feel this way?

Making time for myself in my hectic schedule is so important, so these are some of the ways I do. I recently have been giving kickboxing a try with one of my friends, this a huge challenge for me because I am a perfectionist and it totally takes me out of my comfort zone. I am totally comfortable in a spinning class, yoga class, running, playing tennis, etc., but kickboxing is such a challenge. I am going to keep trying though because I think it's also good to get out of your comfort zone sometimes.

So this is a really random post but I just wanted to talk a little about what I have been doing other than making jewelry. I am really excited about a new addition to my tailored collection though. These pieces are made of sterling silver and felt. They are not up in my Etsy shop yet but they will be soon. Here is a peak though.

Hopefully in 2010 I will be a little better about blogging about what is going on in my world. I feel super lucky all around. I have more great stores carrying my line for 2010, I am working with Spitfire Girl on a super fantastic line of jewelry for their brand with their artwork, I also moved around the holidays in to a cute little guest house in Los Angeles next to one of my best friends, which means I get to hammer all night long without bothering any neighbors. I know things are really tough out there for a lot of people but please don't give up, because at anytime things can turn around for the better!

I made two styles of zodiac necklaces from vintage pieces and wanted to share a picture of the first style.
Of course since they are vintage I can't track down every sign in the style I like. There were lots of complete series in large oval sizes, but they just did not cut it for me.
So between the two styles I have every sign and that works for me. A few of the styles are already listed in my shop.

I can't believe it's already October. I've been busy making new jewelry for shows starting this month, applying to holiday shows, stocking up stores for the holidays, and trying to get my online shop ready for the holidays too. I have no idea where the summer went honestly, but I am looking forward to winter, because that means snowboarding for me! I miss seeing the snowfall out my window. But one great thing about LA is I can drive to the snow and not have to shovel or scrape to get out in the morning.

Last weekend I dropped in to Spitfire Girl's new shop in Echo Park to bring some of my jewelry and pick up a gift for a friend. Kristin runs a super cute brand by the same name with her husband. She also has three other designers that work with them. Together they create everything from stationary, clothes, tote bags, plush robots, party favors, and much much more.

I took a few pictures of the shop while I was there so you can see a glimpse, but if you are in the area you really should stop by and pick up something for yourself or a friend.

So I am totally slacking on keeping up with my blog and I haven't done this feature in a while. If you get a chance check out these fabulous Etsy shops, these are a few that I have found lately while trying to update my shop.

I have been busy trying to decide which craft shows to do this holiday season. So far it looks like I am applying to Patchwork, Renegade SF, and Craft Riot. I may do one more but I am still deciding. I am a little busier this year with store orders, so I don't want to overdue it.

I am also busy enjoying the wonderful weather here in LA. The summer slipped by too quickly, so I have been making up for lost time by playing tennis, surfing, and hanging out with my friends. One of my friends also introduced me to the Baldwin Hills Park stairs and they are not only a fantastic workout but I also get to enjoy a lovely view of the city. If you have been working away diligently all summer like me I highly recommend setting aside some adult play time every week. It really is helping me feel more balanced.

Why does anyone live in Southern California? I sometimes wonder this, mostly when I turn on the television and watch the news. We have wildfires, earthquakes, mudslides, poor air quality, high taxes, and a ridiculously high cost of living. I was calling to check on a shipment of some jeans I ordered a few weeks ago, and the customer service rep and I ended up in a conversation about what it costs to live out here. She lives in Florida on the beach in a brand new two bedroom condo, for less than my one bedroom apartment in an old building. She was telling me she was thinking about moving out here and was just curious what I paid for rent.

So why do I live out here still? Well I snapped this picture this weekend at a surf spot my friend's boyfriend took us to and I think it illustrates just a little of the pull California has on me. We had to sit in crazy weekend traffic on the PCH to get here, but once we did it was definitely worth it. See how empty the water is? It was so nice to not have to look out for 10 other people trying to get the same wave. Plus, since I am a beginner, it meant I actually got a few waves this way :)!

I know I will not stay in Southern California till I grow old; but for the years I will spend here, weekends like the past one really do balance out the bad, at least a little for me.

I really hope the firefighters get some relief in this crazy fight! They are predicting to be fighting it for the next 15 days. Thanks for listening to my little rant.

New Store In Burbank: Mindful Nest

Last night I wandered over to Burbank with my friend Jen to check out and LA Green Drinks event and a new store called Mindful Nest. The space has a great feel as soon as you walk in, and the owners will really make you feel welcome. You will leave smelling yummy too since Jennifer of KLEAN makes her wonderful smelling products on site, and there are plenty of samples for you to try out. Apparently you can even mix your own and they will put your name on the bottle. I've been buying KLEAN products for a few years now and they are always a hit when I give them as gifts.

The idea behind this store is simple, it says on their facebook page, "Please come visit us and share in our love of handmade-artisan gifts.
We support small American companies and focus on a more "mindful"
approach to shopping." They stock "adornments for the home body and soul." I even found some new artists I had not seen before. Amanda is a co-owner and was the manager of Handmade Galleries for 10 years and she is so excited about her dream becoming a reality you will just love shopping in this store. I bought a few KLEAN products for my sister's upcoming birthday while there last night.

It really is so much more fun to shop for gifts at shops like this than at the mall, Target, or some other store filled with mass-produced items. They really found the perfect location for their shop and did a fantastic job decorating.

You can read more about the store in the Burbank Leader and Amanda said they have a write-up coming out in the LA Times Home section this week, so keep an eye out for that.

It just makes me happy to hear about stores like this opening up and people realizing their dreams and visions. It is really inspiring and I wish Amanda and Jennifer all sorts of luck and success in the future.

A Much Needed Day at the Beach

I woke up this morning to a text from my friend Tasha to come meet her and her boyfriend's family at the beach and to bring my board. So I woke up, a little out of it, grabbed some yogurt and headed out the door with some towels, wax, rashguard and my board. I thought I would stop and grab some food for lunch and some water along the way, but I became caught up in the beautiful drive. I drove along the PCH to meet her in Topanga and couldn't believe I was not sitting in traffic. The one thing I always wish would go away in LA is the traffic. I think I haven't seen Tasha since before Christmas because our lives have just been too busy. Well that was a terrible excuse for not seeing my friend and while we hung out today we made plans to see each other soon.

It was really nice to just be out on the beach not checking the clock to leave and rush off somewhere. We swam around in the water, laid out and talked, then we grabbed our boards and headed out into the waves. Luckily they are all better and are a great help. I haven't been on my board all summer and so I will be sore from all the paddling but it was so worth it. Being at the beach today made me remember the beach days in Biddeford Pool. I spent so many summer days there without a care or worry in the world and it was nice to feel that again.

I got my car washed and vacuumed yesterday and of course I promptly filled it with sand today :).

Handmade Nation Movie Premiere in LA

The fabulous ladies of Reform School and Home Ec are bringing Handmade Nation to Los Angeles this weekend. The screenings will be at Cinefamily. I will be there checking out the movie with some friends who support the handmade. If you are not near LA you should check the website to see if it is screening near you.

If you are in LA and can make the premiere on Saturday night you can get a pretty cool swag bag of goodies donated by some talented people.

So I had a wonderful time in San Fransisco for the SFIGF show. I am trying to get my act together to give you a recap of my second wholesale show. I traveled up there with myfriendroze and met a lot of great new people and of course learned a whole lot.

But while I was there Chrissy of The Perfect Palette featured my Pinecone Ring on her blog and I just wanted to share. Burnt orange and chocolate brown isn't it lovely.

My mom made this brochure for me to give out at the SFIGF show.
A few people asked me if I had anything more than the catalog they could take with the at the last gift show. So ask and you shall receive. I do not want to hand out my line sheets to just anyone so here is something buyers can take with them to remind them of my line.
My mom is really quite talented at whipping up promotional materials and she has done work for a variety of businesses and industries over the years. I am really happy with what she came up with for me. She also worked really quickly for me. So I will be printing these off this weekend before heading to SF next week.
I have a lot of jewelry to finish up before leaving, but I am learning so much right now about my business and the direction I want it to go in the next few years.

It's All A Blur

I have been neglecting my poor blog since before Renegade and the California Gift Show. It will most likely continue till after I return from the San Francisco Gift Show.

Renegade was so much fun, I wish I had been able to wander around and soak up all the creative talent that surrounded me. But I was quite busy in the booth I shared with Pink Candy Studio. I was next to Tyler Bender Book Co. He makes totally awesome recycled notebooks, trust me you will want lots for yourself and your friends. My friend Christine of Chocolate and Steel was also in my row and I am going to have to get some new studs from her.

Etsy also sponsored a meet-up at the Hotel Figueroa, I went over there with a few of my CCCOE Street Team members and we got to talk to some Etsy sellers from across the country as well as Etsy Admin. Not to mention the hotel was beautiful and I had no idea it existed.

After Renegade I was frantically getting ready for my first ever wholesale show, I learned so much doing that show it was totally worth it. I got a lot of feedback, and also met some really talented people in who kept me company in the Made by Hand section.

You can see I added lighting and moved things around as the show went on. It was 4 days long so I had lots of time to work on my display. I will take everything I learned and put it to good use in a few weeks for the SFIGF. I stayed up all night before the show opened updating my line sheets. I ran around each day after the show closed trying to get lighting, display pieces, making jewelry, and more. I drank lots of coffee and tea, and I learned that they are serious about fireproofing in LA, and saw my table cloth go up in flames. My business cards arrived after the show closed. I ran out of them after Renegade, but luckily I had postcards to give out. I am working on a brochure and or course I still have more samples to make.

Summer Reading

I am a sucker for book stores and all the wonderful things they hold. I bought this stack of books recently along with a few others. The Tao of Pooh is still on it's way, I feel like rereading it, and I gave away my copy back in college and I lent On Beauty by Zadie Smith to friend. I've also got Breaking Dawn and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on their way.

For summer reading I really like books that excite my imagination and take me away from whatever worries and stress going on in my life. I totally got hooked by the Twilight Saga, I thought it would take me a while to get through them, but I raced through the first three. I had a tough time sleeping this past week, so they provided the entertainment.

I know Twilight and Harry Potter are meant for people a lot younger than me, but I love them nonetheless.

I got the Pendants and Lockets book for a little inspiration. I love the 500 series books that Lark puts out, I just flip through the pages over and over again when I need a little help designing.

A friend recommended Eat Pray Love and I found a used copy while wandering around Silverlake last weekend, so I sped through that book too. This book with the Tao of Pooh will give me a little jolt of spirituality to think about.

I got to read in a back yard this weekend, I was taking care of a friend's dogs and they have the best backyard, so I had to take advantage of the nice weather and the yard.

caught up in The Time Traveler's Wife, because Renegade is next weekend and the California Gift Show is the next week, and of course I still have lots of work to do.

I'm having a little bit of a lazy Saturday morning so I thought these bright colors might get me going a little quicker.

Tennis, The Getty, Chairlift, Ninjas, Art: All in a Day

I had a really great day yesterday. I took care of some business in the morning, restocked The Factory, opened a business checking account and made some bezels. Then met some neighborhood friends for a quick game of paddle tennis. These rackets have a rough service and I seem to scrape my knuckles and elbows.

See they are little courts. I am new to this version of tennis, but it is peaking my interest for sure. Besides, there are courts right down the street from my house.
Then I headed up to the Getty for Saturdays off the 405. I am so happy they switched this event to Saturdays, I could never make it on Fridays with the LA traffic. A Brooklyn based band, Chairlift put on a great show. Caroline has an amazing voice. It was a really great environment to be in. If you know the Getty Museum at all, the scenery, art, and architecture are fantastic. So when you add music, food, and cocktails it makes for a great evening out in Los Angeles. These events are free too, even the parking.

After checking out a little bit of the art we headed downtown to Gallery 1018 for a skate shop art showcase. Another great event, art, music, drinks, tacos, and good people. I used to work for 9star a great board shop in West Los Angeles and Mission Viejo.

I also booked my hotel for the SFIGF show in August, I'm excited for the trip up there. Now if only I could book a hotel for a real vacation, then everything would be perfect.
I forgot my camera so these images will have to do for now. Now I have to get back to my bench before heading out to catch a movie tonight. Days like yesterday really make me feel happy.

I've been out of town for a week at the JCK Las Vegas show. It was quite a trip this time. We stayed in a house that had a pool and pool table. The sad thing was by the time we got home every night we didn't get the chance to enjoy it. We also left so early every morning that there was no time then either.

I am going to be uber busy with work these coming months. So if I neglect my blog I apologize in advance.
I brought my camera so I could show some of the new tools we ordered, some of the stones at AGTA, and a glimpse of the amazing jewelry. But alas I fell short, and no pictured were taken.

So I went and got a massage yesterday and am spending the next few days reviving myself, and of course making a little jewelry. I had a few orders while I was out of town.

Getting ready for JCK

By day I work for a designer, and we are all on our way to Vegas next week for the annual JCK show. It has been a hectic past few weeks. But the new collection is amazing and I really hope it is well received by buyers at the show.

I have been busy with my line too. My jewelry is on it's way to a few new stores and I have two wholesale shows this summer to get ready for.

Today was all about shopping for some clothes for the show. I am a pretty casual dresser. My boss makes fun of my from time to time about this. Every year before JCK I try to find some nicer digs to sport at the show. I have been hitting up shops after work this week, buying things, returning things, and just running around.

I did find some cute shoes today. There was a Kitson clearance sale on the Third Street Promenade and I scored two super cute pairs of shoes. I also hit up an American Apparel rummage sale and got a few great pieces that will get lots of use. I went to Nordstrom Rack, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Urban Outfitters, H & M, Forever 21, Anthropologie, and the list goes on. A bit ridiculous if you ask me. But I was looking for certain things and they were a bit elusive.
This is why I shop rarely, it is too tiring for me. Maybe if I shopped more often it would actually be less tiring right?

I didn't even find the black shoes I was looking for after all that :(.

But I did find this cute USB pirate guy, and my rice seasoning. Notice there are three jars in this picture. Wholefoods and the Asian market by my house stopped carrying the vegetarian version so I stopped for some Boba and stocked up.

Two Years of Little Changes...

If you are anything like me you are never quite satisfied with the display of your work at a show. I am constantly trying to think up better ways to display my jewelry. I also have a tiny Scion XA, which can fit a lot for a little car, but still puts some limits on what is feasible.
I thought it would be fun to post some pictures of my displays from shows over the past two years.

Does anyone else feel this way, or are my friends and I just crazy?
By the way I just had the most delicious vegetarian dinner out with my friend Daf, the place was called Elf. It was the perfect way to start off my long weekend.

For about a month I have been part of the first Blogging Your Way class that Holly Becker of Decor8 fabulousness was teaching online. I fell a little behind on the homework assignments because I have been busy with online orders, new stores, and craft shows. But I have been jotting everything down in my trusty little notebook like a good student. I took lots of notes to look back on later, and I even tried to make a few improvements on my blog layout. We were broken up into smaller groups within the class to get feedback on our blogs and I got some really helpful feedback. My group was called the Busy Bloggers.

The class was really helpful to me because it gave me time to think about what I like to write about, what I want to share through this blog. I really enjoyed the class and took a lot away from it. I would recommend Holly's classes to anyone wanting a little inspiration and guidance in this vast blogging land. Hopefully you will enjoy the changes you see around here. I have lots of ideas stewing so stay tuned for what I write about in the coming months.

Anyway this class had over 200 people, so there were lots of great bloggers in the class. Some were established, some, were brand new, but they all have something to offer so I would like to share just a couple with you.

I realized while taking this class that most of the blogs I read regularly are about things I know nothing about. Design is one of those things. This blog is one I had not read before but really enjoy. I really enjoy Ana's House Tour features, but everything else is great too. She writes her blog from the Bay Area, California.

So Cute it Hurts is a blog from a bubbly, kind girl living in Indonesia names Jacqueline. Be sure to check out her Etsy shop for more cute goodness.

Another design blog that I had not read before, and she writes her blog from Canada. Trina is an interior decorator and she features lots of great ideas and products. She doesn't have a set style she features and that works great for me. She also features local Candian designers and products and that's always good in my book.

I really like the colors and layout of her blog, and her posts show me something I haven't seen before. Wini is in Australia and shows the world her art and design interests on her blog.

La Pomme is a blog written from the south of France. The greeting on the blog says this, "I'm Apol Lejano-Massebieau, a writer, crafter, gardener, lover, and fighter, but not a candlestick-maker." I think this tells you why I enjoy this blog. But to see even more good stuff stop by her two Etsy Shops here and here.

Hope you had fun visiting these blogs from around the world. I am sure I will be featuring more of the talent I found through this class. So inspiring.

By the way I am writing this post after spending the day at the Patchwork show, so if it's a little funny sounding I apologize. Sleep deprivation is setting in quickly.

Shopping List Saturday-Let's Play Dress Up

This week I have been thinking about shopping for new clothes, so I thought it would be fun to play dress-up through some fabulous Etsy shops. I want things to slow down just a little right now, but that does not seem to be happening anytime soon. So, instead lets play a virtual version of a game I used to play with my sisters.

1. 18th Century Marie Antionette Style Corseted Gown Silk from Azrael's Accomplice and AZAC Designs. This gown is simply amazing, I love watching movies like Marie Antoinette just for the costume design, and here is a version I could have for myself.

2. Striped Babydoll Party Dress from Ouma. Oh what fun it would be to go out dancing in this dress.

3. Black and White Damask Corset from MT coffinz Underground. I've always been fascinated by corsets so I had to have one in this dress up game.

4. White Cocktail Dress from yystudio. I just want to wear this dress and go out to dinner with my friends.

Then I made this grouping of clothes I would find more occasions to actually wear in my life right now.

1. Houndstooth Bubble Coat from yellowcake. I really want this coat. I love the accent of color and all the other details. There were other great coats in the shop. But this one just looks like something I would wear all the time.

2. Latte Classic Dress from LA Mixx. I really like simple dark dresses and this one fits the bill. I just have to figure out if it will fit now.

3. Women's Sheer Buttonup Top from LA Mixx. Yes I picked two things from the same Etsy shop. But this shirt looks so comfy, I would just wear it all the time.

Patchwork Fair This Weekend!

Don't forget this Sunday if you live near Santa Ana to come check out the Patchwork Crafts Festival.
This is their fourth event and it's sure to be a hit. There will be over 60 vendors, so some great variety but not too overwhelming. They also always have great food, drinks, music, and some fun activities like button making.

Since this is an outdoors show you also get to bring your dogs. This year one of my friends is coming to help me out and bringing her adorable puppy Nana to keep us company. So come by and say hi if you are around Sunday.

Here are some new necklaces I have been working on. They are not up in my shop yet, but I will have them at the show.

Nico Vega Surprised

Last night I went out to Club Nokia with some friends to see The Ringers, Nico Vega and Shiny Toy Guns. Three out of four bands that made up this line up left me wanting more. Often at a shows I feel like I have to get through the opening acts to see the band I really want to see. So three out of four bands rocking is a rarity.

The Ringers opened so they only got to play a short set, but if you have the chance to check them out definitely do it, you won't be disappointed. Joe Hursley is the frontman and he pours everything he has into the perfomance.
The Ringers set the pace for what was to come later in the show with Nico Vega and Shiny Toy Guns. These bands all had amazing energy and really put on great performances.

Nico Vega stood out the most for me. I had heard of them before on Indie 103.1, but had not had a chance to see them live. When she started singing all I could hear around me was, who is the band, that girl's got chops, etc. Aja's voice and energy on stage is captivating. She too pours her soul into her music and it rains down on the audience. As soon as their set ended my friend and I just had to go get the cd. I don't buy a lot of cd's anymore. It's a little sad I know, I used to spend all my money on music when I was in high school, but now I download, unless I absolutely must have the cd with the lyrics, and art work. Nico Vega is a cd I had to have and it will be playing loud in my studio today as I work on some orders.

I don't get to go to as many shows now as I used to, but I am definitely glad I got to go to this one last night. Go see Nico Vega when they are near you. You can check out their site for more info.

Oops I swear I will be on time next week. But I was at Unique LA all weekend and I completely forgot to show you some great finds. So this week my shopping list will be made up of items from some of the Unique LA vendors.

Sometimes I Just Need to Clear My Head

I know this is something everyone feels. But today I felt an overwhelming need to clear my head. So after I got home from work today, I got on my bike and took off to the beach. It was already dark outside when left, so I really do need to get some lights for my bike. (I did have lights on the bike that was stolen)

Once I pedaled the 6 miles to Venice, I was able to just sit in the sand, listen to the ocean and stare at the stars. I closed my eyes and played in the sand. The feeling of the sand in my hands really calmed me. When I was in high school I used to go to my beach in Maine and sit out on the rocks at night and just listen to the waves then I went off to college in a place without beach. Now that I live in California I really need to get to the beach more often.

I have a tattoo on my write wrist of mountain, ocean waves, and a sun. It is supposed to remind me that that is all I need wherever I go in my life. Somehow while setting out to achieve my goals and dreams I lost sight of some of the simplest things.

I barely made it out snowboarding this season. I was so wrapped up with shows, stores, and orders I kept putting off the trips. I rarely go to the beach and I live 6 miles from it. As of today I am taking a vacation from the news and spending that time outside instead.

This is a little more personal than my usual posts. But if you would like please tell me how you clear your head or take a little me time?

I am going to be swamped till this weekend but I wanted to share two of my newest designs!
I am so excited about the vintage buttons I have been finding lately. All of these styles will be very limited, less then ten of each will be made. There are lots of other designs that I will be showing to the world for the first time at Unique LA this weekend.

If you live near Los Angeles you should definitely come out to the California Market Center in downtown LA. There will be so many great things there for you to get your hands on. Don't forget about those Mother's Day gifts you might be needing.

Thankyou so much everyone for all the fantastic feedback. I received so much insight and am going to compile the results and share it soon. I thought some of the other jewelry designers out there might like to see what I found.

I learned that I can't spell leverbacks, sorry about the liver :). I also forgot about huggies as an earring style, oops.

One thing I found is that of the people taking this survey, 50% wear 18 inch necklaces, good to know right. I do so much custom work that I have made everything from 14 inches to 36 inches.

What are you doing to make your life a little greener? Do you have any helpful tips to share?

I recently heard about these reusable water bottles by Clear 2 Go that filter any tap water for you. I know this is something I could definitely use. I reuse the same plastic bottles over and over but I could always do better. Just think of how many plastic water bottles this could save, not to mention the money.

I'm working on a new line that is made with 100% recycled materials, hopefully I will be ready to show pictures soon. If you get a chance enjoy a bit of the outdoors today.

This is how I spent the weekend. I realized I need to order more sheet, tubing, chains, and bezel wire this week. I have two shows in May so I am just trying to get my stock up.

I also finished these earrings. They are an updated version of my Beautiful Bee Earrings. I added some really pretty yellow sapphires and I like the change. What do you think?

Copenhagen City of Cyclists Music Video

I check out the blog Copenhagen Cycle Chic often and I saw this video today. The blogger Mikael made this video and I think it's great for us over here in the US to see all the ways people get around on their bicycles in other countries.

They aren't just riding their bikes down the street or in nice weather, they ride all year round. They cart kids, instruments, work gear, art work, groceries, and more on their two wheeled transportation. And on this blog many of the people pictured even do it in style.

I've been trying to find a bike that is suited for commuting and am so jealous of many of the bikes I see on this blog. I don't want anything fancy just something comfortable and suited for riding 20 miles a day.

And although people were hoping they would adopt a stray, who can resist a cute 6 month old dog that looks like this.

I got to hang out with my friend's puppy Nana last night, so I am just loving puppies today.

So many dogs need good loving homes out there. I hope I will get to have one someday soon.
I'm allergic though so I only have so many options.

I love this little shoe boutique in Silverlake called Vamp Shoes. You can check out their blog here. The great thing about living in LA is these shoes can be worn for so many months.
Turns out Vamp is moving to Los Feliz on May 1st. They are moving in next to Alcove and the Mustard Seed, yummy food and cute shoes, what more could a girl want.

I moved a couch out on to my balcony this weekend and as you can see it is a nice place to relax.

Here are some pictures of supplies I've picked up lately. Most are just for restocking. I am trying to get ready for show in May and July.

I'm excited about this bottom strand of flower agate.

I decided to start buying my buttons from JHB rather than stalking local fabric stores. Of course I am still stalking Ebay and flea markets for the vintage ones though.

Posts waiting to be set. These will be going to OAK in Boston.

Just some pics of a weekend day, thought it would be fun to see how the day started and ended.
All those bezels have been made into necklaces and rings now and off to new homes.

Yesterday I restocked Handmade Galleries in Sherman Oaks. With some of their customer favorites. I also made it down to Santa Ana to the Gra nd Central Art Center to restock and refresh my jewelry there.

This is a new ring that I am keeping for myself. Isn't this a great vintage button find?

The best part of the day yesterday was my new haircut, it's back to super short and I couldn't be happier. I just need to take a picture sometime soon.

That's it for now, I just go back from my first jog with my new sneakers and am no happy to put my old ones to rest.

My pics this week were all inspired by Etsy's There's No Place Like Here feature of Something's Hiding in Here's amazing loft in Philadelphia. These items are all things I would like to have around my apartment to add to collections I have and wall space I still haven't been able to get quite right.

I managed to create some layered curtains this week after a few setbacks, I am happy to report they are up! I had a minor setback with some decals I ordered. I realized the walls of my rented apartment are bumpy, so my grand plan of having chalkboard circle decals in my studio failed miserably.

I am going to try to get some pictures of the progress taken soon!

My sister sent me this fantastic package. I ordered this fabric from her
Etsy store to make necklaces with. She made me a cool file roll, and pillow covers.
Of course she threw in some other cool items from Japan for me.

Hoover and Strong shipment. I have shows in May that I need to prepare for.

New Wise Old Owl Necklace

I recently found out that I am going to be featured in an article about eco-friendly jewelry. This made me stop to think because I make choices about materials and other supplies, but don't really educate my customer about them.

I simply buy from the most eco-friendly refiner and manufacturer of metals out there. This means all of my raw materials are made from recycled metals. You can visit Hoover and Strong's site for more information. I also save all my scrap and send it back to them.
I sometimes mention this in descriptions, but realized I should make it more obvious. So I added more info to my shop today.

I make choices of where I buy my packaging materials and promotional materials too. A great green printer I use is GreenerPrinter.

I also have to use chemicals in my studio. Here are a few pickles you can use that are biodegradable and better for you, Black Magic Pickle and Citric Pickle.

I use biodegradable flux too.

Another metalsmith that does all of this and more is Figs and Gi nger. I love their forest inspired jewelry. And their green values page inspired me to let my customers know about the choices I too make in my studio.

So this week I've been busy finishing up my taxes, restocking a few stores, applying to spring shows, and making some new work. I hope to take pictures tomorrow! I'm having a little crafty get together at my place tomorrow and am hoping to get lots done.

But I still always find the time to wander around on Etsy and find wonderful items to inspire me.

I am so indecisive about decorating but this caught my attention. It comes in a variety of colors. But this combo always catches my attention.

These caught my attention because I love seeing textile techniques in a fresh way. I can also appreciate the time she spends on these because I make necklaces using the same technique.

He was a featured seller on Etsy this week and I had seen his work a while back, but I got a reminder of how much I love his tables. I would love to have a coffee table like this.

I had lots of other favorites this week. These are just a few, but I'm hoping to set aside some of my tax return for a some of my Etsy favorites. The only hard part will be deciding.

I'm back from my trip to Mammoth and here are a few Picnik collages of what I have been up to.

I have lots of new vintage buttons that I can't wait to make jewelry with.

I got some great vintage luggage from GetReadySetGo and I made my favorite tofu scramble.

Mammoth got tons of snow and they are getting more, the conditions are amazing! So much snow.
